How did Britain become a Stasi state?

Thursday February 7, 2008

Britain used to be proud of its freedoms, writes Stephen Glover. What is going on today was unthinkable 30 years ago

“Not long ago,” writes Stephen Glover in the Daily Mail, British children were taught that their country was the freest in the world … The feeling in us that the British State was essentially benign and non-intrusive ran very deep.”

Today, says Glover, “Britain has become one of the most bugged, surveyed countries on Earth … We have more CCTV cameras than any other country in the world. We have the biggest national DNA database in the world. We probably also have one of the highest rates of monitoring.

“How did this happen?” asks Glover. “How complacent we have been in allowing our country to change from being one of the most easy-going in the world to being one of the most spied upon and bugged.

“Our mistake has been to believe that everything has been done for our benefit. We should fight identity cards, and every other encorachment, on the basis that we cannot be sure that the State will always be our friend.”
